Marla and the narrator and Harold and Maude are two sets of people with very peculiar hobbies who might have thought they were alone in the world only two find another person as eccentric as themselves. (There are theories on how Marla Singer is also the narrator, I like to think she isn't.) Marla and the narrator in Fight Club enjoy attending support groups very much, the narrator needs them to be able to coupe with his empty routine driven life. Harold and Maude share the hobby of attending strangers funerals. Both couples develop an unlikely but adorable romance. Marla and Maude have a carefree attitude towards dying, even when Marla's is negative and Maude's is extremely positive. The narrator and Harold have the resources to have their lives "figure out" but they unconsciously and consciously decide to stay away from that. Both Harold and the narrator have no existencial meaning but are fighting really hard to find one.
Marla y el narrador y Harold y Maude son dos conjuntos de personas con pasatiempos muy peculiares que seguramente pensaban que estaban solos en el mundo solo para encontrar a otro individuo tan excéntrico como ellos. (Existen teorías sobre como Marla Singer es también el narrador, yo prefiero creer que no lo es. ) Marla y el narrador en El Club de la Pelea disfrutan mucho de atender grupos de apoyo, el narrador los necesita para poder sobrellevar su vida vacía de rutina. Harold y Maude comparten el pasatiempo de ir a funerales de extraños. Ambas parejas desarrollan un romance improbable pero adorable. Marla y Maude tienen una actitud despreocupada en cuanto a morir, aun cuando la actitud de Marla sea negativa y la de Maude positiva en extremo. El narrador y Harold tienen los recursos para tener sus vidas "resueltas" pero deciden consciente e inconscientemente mantenerse alejados de eso. Tanto Harold como el narrador no tienen significado existencial pero están luchando fuertemente para conseguir uno.
"This chick Marla Singer did not have testicular cancer. She was a liar. She had no diseases at all. I had seen her at Free and Clear, my blood parasite group Thursdays.
